Leaders in Rochester’s religious community are calling for changes to help end systemic racism in law enforcement.
During a press conference hosted by the United Christian Leadership Ministry Wednesday, leaders offered a number of proposals, including a racial education curriculum for officers, more comprehensive de-escalation training and increasing the number of pre-arrest diversion options.
They say they hope these recommendations not only curb systemic racism, but also promote honest dialogue, build trust between police and community members, and transition law enforcement from what they call a “warrior culture” to one of acting as “servant protectors of community”.
