Parents, students complain of racism in Southington schools

Dozens of residents, students and parents attended a Board of Education meeting Thursday and called on school leaders to address racial discrimination and bullying.
Many speakers mentioned a video that circulated online last month in which a Southington High School student threatened fellow black students.
Parents and students, many of them minorities, said they faced discrimination ranging from unequal discipline to racial name-calling. While the recent video brought the topic up, they said it’s been an issue for years in Southington.
“This is not a new issue. We have been dealing with this for years,” said Lauren Jones. She has a child in kindergarten who she said feels “ashamed to be brown.”
